British scientist James Smithson (June 5, 1765 - May 27, 1829) passed his estate along "to the United States of America, to found at Washington, under the name of the Smithsonian Institution, an establishment for the increase & diffusion of knowledge among men". The Institution is a group of museums and research centers administered by the United States government. This stamp features a painting of "The Castle". It is the Institution's first building and is still used as the Smithsonian's headquarters. "The Castle" can be found near the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
