  • History: Art has been a major part of the history of the United States.  After the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, art became a necessity to capture significant moments in history.  In 1820, the United States opened the Hudson River School, which was the country's first school of painting.  Some of the school's first students included artists such as Alfred Bierstadt and Frederic Edwin Church.  These artists paved the way for later painters like Winslow Homer and Albert Pinkham Ryder, who painted images of the ever expanding rural America.
