• History: A Kelp Forest is a dense underwater colony of giant seaweeds known as 'kelp'. These underwater forests exist from about 50 to 125 feet under water. In order for kelp to grow two things are necessary, exposure to sunlight and a hard surface to grow on. Kelp Forests exist all over the world in both temperate and polar oceans. They have recently even been discovered in a tropical region near Ecuador. The Kelp Forests provide sustenance for a variety of underwater creatures. Some Kelp Forest have been designated as "Marine Protected Areas" or MPAs in an effort to preserve their natural order.
