  • History: The American Scientists stamp sheet features four remarkable individuals who made invaluable contributions to American science. Gerty Cori (August 15, 1896 - October 26, 1957) was a biochemist famous for her groundbreaking discoveries related to sugar and how it is processed within the body. Cori was the third woman, and the first American woman, to win a Nobel Peace Prize. Linus Pauling (February 28, 1901 - August 19, 1994) is widely considered one of the most influential scientists to ever live. He was one of the first scientists to study quantum chemistry and molecular biology. In 1954, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in Chemistry. Pauling is also know for his peace activism for which he was awarded another Nobel Peace Prize in 1962. Edwin Hubble (November 20 1889 - September 28, 1953) is among the most important astronomers to ever live. Hubble's ideas about an expanding universe laid the groundwork for the "Big Bang" theory. The Hubble Space Telescope which was named after Edwin Hubble has captured many images of celestial objects that are millions of light years away. John Bardeen (May 23, 1908 - January 30, 1991)  is the only person to have ever won two Nobel Peace Prizes in the field of physics. Bardeen and his colleagues are credited with the invention of the transistor which is used to make nearly every electronic device. Bardeen was on the list of LIFE Magazine's "100 Most Influential Americans of the Century."
