History: Hubert H. Humphrey (1911-1978) was a Senator for Minnesota and the 38th Vice President of the United States, serving from 1965-1969 under President Lyndon B. Johnson. Humphrey ran for President in 1968 in a three-way race against Republican candidate Richard Nixon and American Independent George Wallace, who ran on a platform of restoring racial segregation. Humphrey was a deeply unpopular candidate, having been nominated despite failing to participate in a single state primary. The 1968 Democratic National Convention was notably overshadowed by rioting by protesters of the Vietnam War. Humphrey's support for the war cost him the votes of the left, while George Wallace's pro-segregation campaign stole the once "solid South" away from the Democrats. Having lost his bid for the presidency, Hubert Humphrey later returned to the Senate, again representing Minnesota, from 1971 until his death in 1978.
