• History: This stamp sheet commemorates the 400th anniversary of Sir Walter Raleigh's voyages to Roanoke Island off the coast of North Carolina. The purpose of the mission was to establish a permanent English colony in North America. The settlers left there were cut off from the English crown for three years due to bad weather followed by the outbreak of the Anglo-Spanish War. When the English finally returned to the colony in 1590, they found it mysteriously abandoned. The fate of the so-called "Lost Colony" remains to this day one of the greatest unsolved puzzles in American history.
