- History: The FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) is a corporation owned by the federal government of the United States. It was incorporated in 1933 to provide deposit insurance to bank account holders. The act authorizing the FDIC was passed in response to the failure of the American banking system which led to the Great Depression. The FDIC currently provides $250,000 of insurance on deposits in all member banks. This insurance protects private bank account holders and prevents bank runs, common before the creation of the FDIC. This stamp sheet celebrates the 50th anniversary of the founding of the FDIC.
