History: Martin Luther (1483-1546) was the key figure behind the Protestant Reformation. His Nintety-Five Theses, published in 1517, critized contemporary practices of the Roman Catholic Church, leading to his excommunication. His teachings led tot he birth of the Lutheran movement, and more broadly, all modern Prostestant denominations of Christianity. Martin Luther is famous for his efforts to reform Christian practice and to make the Bible accessible to ordinary worshippers, but has also been condemned for his antisemetic beliefs, as his writings advocated for the destruction of Jewish homes and places of worship. After his death, his teachings led to anti-Jewish riots in Lutheran parts of Germany, leading to the expulsion of Jews from those states. His antisemitic writings, notably including On the Jews and Their Lies, were banned in several German cities after they were cited by pastors to call for the murder of Jews. This stamp sheet was issued on Martin Luther's 500th birthday.
