  • History: Enrico Caruso (1873-1921) was an Italian opera performer. Caruso began his career on the stage in Naples, achieving more widespread fame outside of Italy after he was commissioned to make a series of Gramophone recordings in 1902. In 1903, Caruso was hired by the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, and would go on to make 863 appearances there, in addition to his tours throughout the world. In addition to his theatre appearances and widely successful recordings, he also appeared in two films in 1918 and 1919. For his contributions to the American musical landscape of the early 20th century, the USPS issued this stamp sheet in his honor in 1987.
