History: This stamp sheet celebrates five famous steam boats from the 19th century. Until the 20th century, river boats played an indispensable role in transporting goods and people across America's rivers, lakes, and other inland waterways. The beloved author Mark Twain was a river boat pilot until the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861. His penname originates from "mark twain", the cry used by leadsmen to indicate that a river was deep enough for the safe passage of a steamboat.
