• History: The carousel has its origins in the jousting traditions of knights in the Middle Ages, which led to the development of wooden horses in the 18th century. The modern carousel, in which animals and chariots are fixed to a circular platform, emerged in the mid-19th century. Many elaborate and ornate carousels were designed in America in the early 20th century. This stamp sheet celebrates some of those designs.
