History: Recognizing an opportunity to spread love for Valentine’s Day, the United States Post Office created a commemorative stamp series dedicated to love. A non-denominational version of this stamp was issued before Valentine's Day (February 1, 1995). This was due to the impending postage rate change. This new version of the stamp was issued later in the year once the new rate of 32c was known. The image of the angel was based on Raphael's "Sistine Madonna". There was some controversy caused by the imagery when it came to light that child angels were associated with death, not love.
