History: On January 24th, 1848, a man named James W. Marshall found gold at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California. As news spread, over 300,000 people flocked to the area, setting off what is now known as the California Gold Rush. As most arrived by 1849, these gold seekers gained the nickname "forty-niners". The amount of gold found between 1848 and 1855 would have amounted to tens of billions of dollars today. At the beginning of the rush, gold nuggets could just be picked up off the ground. With the arrival of so many prospectors, San Francisco grew from about 200 residents in 1846 to almost 36,000 in 1852. The population boom was a major factor in California gaining its statehood in 1850.
