• History: Evolved from the sport of rugby, American football was first played on November 6th, 1869 between Rutgers and Princeton.  Although the game has changed through the years, there are a few legendary coaches. Four of the greats are represented on this stamp sheet.  Longtime coach of the University of Alabama, Bear Bryant led his team to six national championships and thirteen conference championships between 1958 and 1982.  Glenn Scobey "Pop" Warner coached from 1895 to 1938 for eight different universities, he coached four national champion teams.  During the 1960's, Vince Lombardi coached the Green Bay Packers, who won three straight and five out of seven championships. The Super Bowl champion receives the Lombardi trophy named for the famed coach.  Considered one of the co-founders of the National Football League in 1922, George Halas led his teams to eight NFL titles as a coach and owner, totaling 324 wins for his career.
