History: America has come a long way since the first flights of the Wright brothers in 1903. Military and civilian planes have advanced though the years. Most of the planes represented here are from World War II and earlier. They are known as the "Classic American Aircraft." From the Wright's Model B of 1911, which featured wheeled-skids and pilot seats to the Stratojet of 1940, which had six jet engines and the ability to refuel during flight, many innovations made in the early years of flight are still seen today. Today the DC-3, which served a variety of roles during WWII, still carries freight and passengers around the world.
