History: Hanging in the rotunda of the United States Capital is an oil painting by John Trumbull depicting the last major battle of the Revolutionary War. Completed in 1820, the former soldier shows the surrender of the British Army at Yorktown, Virginia in 1781. Led by General George Washington, and aided by 29 French War ships, the coalition successfully defeated the British. On October 19th, 1781, Cornwallis finally gave in and the United States had won their Independence from England.
