  • History: Sickle Cell disease is a hereditary blood disorder that, due to lack of oxygen, causes the red blood cells to take a sickle-like shape.  Some of the health issues associated with this include severe infections, pain, and stroke. It also increases the risk of death.  Almost 300,000 children are born with a form of sickle-cell each year, with most of them being from sub-Saharan African descent.  Complications can be prevented with vaccinations, antibiotics, blood transfusions and sometimes bone marrow transplants.
