History: Born Marion Robert Morrison, John Wayne (May 26, 1907 - June 11, 1979) was born in Winterset, Iowa, as an actor, director, and producer, was among the top box office draws for almost 30 years. Wayne was known for his laid back demeanor, calm voice, and rugged manly virility. After losing his football scholarship at the University of Southern California because of a body surfing accident, Wayne started working for the Fox Film Corporation, appearing only in small parts until 1930. That year he gained his first leading role in the film, The Big Trail. He would go on to star in 142 pictures, mostly westerns, and won an Academy Award in 1969 for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his work in True Grit. Wayne appeared in his last feature film in 1976. In 1979, John Wayne died of stomach cancer after beating lung cancer in 1964. Many believe the cancer came from nuclear contamination from working on a film in Utah in 1956, but Wayne himself believed it had something to do with his six-pack-a-day cigarette habit.
