• History: Born Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku (August 24, 1890 - January 22, 1968) in Hawaii, he was an Olympic swimmer who was also known as an actor and businessman.  Kahanamoku is credited with popularizing the sport of surfing.  Known as "The Big Kahuna," he was a five-time Olympic medalist and competed in his first Olympics in 1912.  In 1912 Kahanamoku broke the 200 meter freestyle record in his trial heat for the 4x200 relay. He went on to win Olympic gold in the 100 meter freestyle and in the 4x200 relay.  In between Olympics, Duke would travel around the world to give swimming exhibitions and brought surfing to the forefront.  To this day a statue in his honor is a popular tourist destination at Waikiki Beach. Vacationers from around the world travel to pay homage to the "The Big Kahuna."
