  • History: One of the most popular children's toys of all time is the teddy bear.  They come in all shapes, sizes and colors.  These iconic stuffed animals get their name from President Theodore Roosevelt. At the time, much to his dismay, President Roosevelt was known as "Teddy."  The incident for which these toys were created happened while the President was on a hunting trip to Mississippi during the fall of 1902.  There were several other hunters taking part, and most of them had already made a kill.  Some of Roosevelt's aides cornered and trapped a black bear in a willow tree. They suggested the president shoot the black bear.  Roosevelt considered this unsportsmanlike, and ordered the bear be killed by someone else.  Hearing of this, Washington Post artist, Clifford Berryman, drew up a political cartoon to poke fun at the situation.  Instead of an adult black bear, Berryman's cartoon featured a small bear cub.  Inspired by this cartoon, and with permission from the president to use his name, a man named Morris Michtom created a new toy that we still know today as the teddy bear.
