History: This Black Heritage Series stamp sheet features the portrait of American actress Hattie McDaniel (June 10, 1895 - October 26, 1952). Best known for her role as Mammy in Gone with the Wind which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, Hattie McDaniel was also a professional singer-songwriter, comedian, stage actress, radio performer, and television star. Born in Wichita, Kansas, McDaniel was the first African American to win an Academy Award. In 1975, she was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame, and she also has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Appearing in over 300 films in her career, Hattie McDaniel also served as chairman of the "Negro Division" of the Hollywood Victory Committee which provided soldiers with entertainment stationed at military bases during World War II.
