History: This Constellations stamp sheet features 4 constellations that were originally described in the 2nd Century by Ptolemy the astronomer. Ptolemy mapped out a total of 48 constellations throughout his life. Since Ptolemy the total number of described constellations has grown to 88. Leo is Latin for the word "Lion." It is known to be one of the largest and few that resembles its name. Orion represents the mythical hunter and lies on the celestial equator. Orion is one of the easiest constellations to find in the night sky because of the three stars in sequence that make the hunter's belt. Pegasus like Leo is also one of the largest constellations in the night sky. Pegasus is visible in both the Northern and Southern Hemisphere, although in the Southern Hemisphere it will appear upside down. Lyra was named after the "lyre" which is a stringed musical instrument. It is one of the smaller constellations and contains the star "Vega" which is the fifth brightest star in the night sky.
