  • History: The Sunday Funnies are the full color comic strips distributed with newspapers on Sundays only. The other days of the week do not feature full color comic strips. This sheet highlights what have been some of the most popular comics over the years. Beetle Bailey started in 1950, and is set at a fictional military post. It is one of the oldest comic strips still being produced by the original author Mort Walker. Calvin and Hobbes started in 1985 and is authored by Bill Waterson. The two characters are based on a theologian and a philosopher (John Calvin and Thomas Hobbes). The comic tends to subtly comment on existential and social issues. Archie is the oldest of the comics on this sheet. Archie first appeared in Pep Comics issue #22 in 1941. Since his debut Archie and his friends have appeared in many different comic strips and comic books. The creation of the characters in Archie comics is credited to John L. Goldwater. Garfield by Jim Davis has been a huge success in American culture and has spawned multiple television specials and motion picture movies. Garfield's popularity is partly attributed to the light-hearted nature of the comic. It follows Garfield the cats though many real and imagined adventures. Dennis the Menace by Hank Ketcham which started in 1951 could also be considered an icon of American pop-culture. The comic is about the antics of a young boy who is always getting into mischief. Like Garfield, Dennis the Menace has also been the springboard for many television shows and major motion pictures.
