  • History: The National World War II Memorial officially opened to the public on April 29th, 2004. One month later, on May 29th, the memorial was formally dedicated by President George W. Bush. The memorial was constructed to honor the millions of Americans who fought in the war, the 400,000 Americans who gave their lives and the countless others who supported the war efforts from home. 56 granite pillars surround a fountain in an oval shape, the pillars are representative of each of the fifty states, five U.S. Territories and the District of Columbia. The memorial cost approximately $175 million dollars to construct and it draws over 4 million visitors per year.
