Michigan - Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is on the upper peninsula of Michigan. It is 42 miles long and covers about 114 square miles. It features picturesque views of the shoreline between Munising, Michigan and Grand Marais, Michigan. There are many beautiful rock formations, including natural archways, waterfalls and sand dunes. The name is derived from the 15 miles of sandstone cliffs northeast of Munising. Some of the cliffs are 200 feet tall. They have been sculpted into a number of formations that are magnificent. One particular point of interest is Chapel Rock. The formation was created some 3800 years ago and was an archway. The archway collapsed in the 1940s. A pillar remains and there is a large white pine tree growing atop of it. This rock and tree are depicted on the reverse of the 2018 Michigan Quarter.
Wisconsin - Apostle Islands National Lakeshore
The Apostile Islands are comprised of a group of 22 islands in Lake Superior. They span two counties in northern Wisconsin. The islands provide a diverse and unique environment for over 800 different species of plants. Additionally, the islands are home to one of the largest populations of black bears in North America. The shore has a number of sea caves and provide important habitats for a number of nesting birds. The reverse of the 2018 Wisconsin Quarter depicts the sea caves at Devils Island with a lighthouse in the background and a kayaker paddling in the foreground.
Minnesota - Voyageurs National Park
Voyageurs National park was established in 1975 to commemorate the "voyageurs", French Canadian fur traders that frequently traveled through the area. The park is popular for it's water resources and attracts boaters and fishermen. There is a peninsula within the park that is only accessible by boat. A crane and rock cliff are portrayed on the reverse of the 2018 Minnesota Quarter.
Georgia - Cumberland Island National Seashore
The Cumberland Island National Seashore is a preserve containing most of Cumberland Island, Georgia's largest barrier island. The National Park Service restricts access to the island and only allows 300 people to be on the island at any given time. The island has an enormous diversity of different plants, both coastal and inland within its wilderness. It is a common stop for migratory water fowl. The reverse of the 2018 Georgia Quarter features a snowy egret aside a salt marsh.
Rhode Island - Block Island National Wildlife Refuge
The Block Island National Wildlife refuge was established in 1973. It began with the transfer of 28 acres from the U.S. Coast Guard and has grown to 127 acres. It's purpose is to provide an important habitat for wildlife, mostly songbirds which inhabit the area in the fall. The island is located in the Atlantic flyway and many young songbirds overfly their southern trip and use the island as a sanctuary before continuing their trip. As a result, the island is one of the most important habitats on the east Coast for migratory birds and attracts birders from all over the world. The island is a popular stop for the black-crowned night heron and the coin depicts the bird flying over a cove with a lighthouse in the background.
