The Sacagawea Native American Dollar was authorized to be redesigned in the Native American $1 Coin Act, passed in 2007.  The act called for the one dollar coin to be redesigned to depict "images celebrating the important contributions made by Indian tribes and individual Native Americans to the development of the United States..."  The redesigned Native American Dollars kept the obverse design largely intact, although the date and inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM were moved to the edge of the coin.

The 2017 issue commemorates Sequoyah, a Cherokee silversmith who created a syllabary to write the Cherokee language in 1821. Sequoyah's writing system was not based on any existing script, making this one of the few times in history that a people developed an original writing system. The syllabary led to a rapid increase in literacy among the Cherokee Nation, quickly surpassing the literacy rate of European-Americans. The reverse depicts Sequoyah in the act of writing with a quill and parchment. The words "Sequoyah from Cherokee Nation" are written in Cherokee.

This 2017-D Native American Sacagawea Dollar is of great worth to the collector or numismatist that needs to fill a hole in their BU Sacagawea Dollar set.  The Sacagawea Dollar weighs 8.1 grams and has a diameter of 26.5mm.  Sacagawea Dollars are composed of a pure copper core with outer layers of manganese brass (.770 copper, .120 zinc, .070 manganese, and .040 nickel).
