There were only 272,869 of this American Buffalo Silver Dollar minted at the Philadelphia (P) Mint. This 2001-P American Buffalo Commemorative Coin was produced by the United States Mint and is specially designed and created to commemorate the National Museum of the American Indian of the Smithsonian Institution, which opened in 2001. The design of the American Buffalo Commemorative Dollar was based on the five-cent Buffalo nickel designed by James Earle Fraser. The obverse of the 2001 American Buffalo Commemorative Silver Dollar features a Native American profile, and the reverse is of an American Bison.
This modern commemorative silver dollar is comprised of .900 (90%) silver and .100 (10%) copper with a diameter of 38.1mm and a weight of 26.73 grams with a reeded edge.
