The Sacagawea Native American Dollar was authorized to be redesigned in the Native American $1 Coin Act, passed in 2007.  The act called for the one dollar coin to be redesigned to depict "images celebrating the important contributions made by Indian tribes and individual Native Americans to the development of the United States..."  The redesigned Native American Dollars kept the obverse design largely intact, although the date and inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM were moved to the edge of the coin.

The 2018 Native American Dollar recognizes Jim Thorpe, also known as Wa-Tho-Huk, which translates to "Bright Path". Bright Path was a renowned athlete and an Olympic gold medalist and a member of the "Sac and Fox Nation". He was the first Native American to win an Olympic gold medal for his home country. Jim is regarded as one of the most multi-talented athletes in the modern era, winning gold medals in the 1912 pentathlon and decathlon. He also played professional football and baseball as well as basketball. He was named the "greatest athlete" of the first 50 years of the 1900s, and he was inducted into the "Pro Football Hall of Fame" in 1963. The reverse (tails) design depicts Thorpe, with the foreground elements highlighting his football and Olympic achievements. Inscriptions are "JIM THORPE," "WA-THO-HUK" (his native name), "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and "$1."

This 2018-P Native American Sacagawea Dollar is of great worth to the collector or numismatist that needs to fill a hole in their BU Sacagawea Dollar set.  The Sacagawea Dollar weighs 8.1 grams and has a diameter of 26.5mm.  Sacagawea Dollars are composed of a pure copper core with outer layers of manganese brass (.770 copper, .120 zinc, .070 manganese, and .040 nickel).
