• History: John Hanson (1721-1783) was the 9th President of the Continental Congress from 1781-1782. Hanson was the first President to serve under the Articles of Confederation, before the modern Constitution was ratified in 1789. For this reason, some people believe Hanson to be the true first President of the United States rather than George Washington, who was the first to serve in the office of the Presidency as it exists today.
