History: This stamp sheet honors veterans of World War I. The United States entered the war in 1917, three years after the war had begun. Between 1917 to 1918, the United States sent nearly 5,000,000 soldiers across the Atlantic Ocean to fight in a greater global conflict between the Allied Powers (primarily the United Kingdom, France, and Russia) and the Central Powers (primarily the German Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the Ottoman Empire). The war changed the world, setting into motion most of the major events of the 20th century. Many of the world's greatest powers at the time crumbled by the end of the war.
