History: This stamp sheet celebrates the centennial of the inaugural season of the Metropolitan Opera in 1883. The Metropolitan Opera was opened in New York to compete with the older Academy of Music, which was patronized by New York's old money establishment, who refused to allow the newly wealthy families such as the Vanderbilts, Morgans, and Rockefellers. The spurned families founded their own opera company as a result, which soon drove the Academy of Music out of business. Today, the Metropolitan Opera is the largest organization for classical music in North America, and is renowned worldwide for contributing to the world of music for over a century.
