We are pleased to offer for sale this 1883 Shield Nickel coin graded and encapsulated as MS-63 by PCGS.  This Shield Nickel is a Variety 2, Without Rays (1867-1883).  1,451,500 of these 1883 Shield Nickels were minted at the Philadelphia Mint.

The Shield Nickel series ran from 1866 through 1883.  The first Shield Nickels were coined with rays between the stars on the obverse. The rays proved difficult to strike and by 1867 they were removed from the design. There were no other changes to the coin until it was replaced by the Liberty Nickel in 1883. These Shield Nickels are comprised of .750 copper and .250 nickel. The Shield Nickels have a weight of 5 grams, a diameter of 20.5mm with a plain edge. This Shield Nickel is of great value and worth to the collector looking to fill a hole in their Shield Nickel set.  Some of our slabbed nickels do have toning.  We offer an incredible selection of PCGS and NGC certified Nickels!
