History: Francis Bret Harte (August 25, 1836 - May 5, 1902) was an American author and poet. Harte is best remembered for is short fiction featuring characters from the California Gold Rush including miners, gamblers, and outlaws. His story "The Luck of Roaring Camp", which appeared in the Overland Monthly, propelled Harte to nationwide fame.
