- History: The concept of hospice has been around since the 11th century. Modern hospice care is said to have been started by a British nurse named Dame Cicely Saunders in the 1950's. After helping a dying Polish refugee she realize the terminally ill needed special care to help address their concerns, as well as to comfort their physical ailments. After completing medical school, Saunders opened up St. Christopher's Hospice in south east London. Soon after the dean of Yale School of Nursing worked with Saunders, she brought the idea back to the United States, opening Hospice, Inc in 1971.
