History: On May 29th, 1848, Wisconsin became the 30th state admitted to the union. Known as "America's Dairyland," it is the leading dairy producing state in the country. Wisconsin is the 23rd biggest state in the nation. The most common ancestry group found in the state is German, making up over 40% of the state's population. The state capital is located in Madison. Wisconsin is second to only Michigan in the length of Great Lakes coastline. Between 1901 and 1914, Wisconsin became the first to create a statewide primary election system, the first to pass a workplace injury compensation law, and the first state to have an income tax. Other than cheese, Wisconsin is known for it contributions to manufacturing paper products, information technology, and tourism. Milwaukee located on Lake Michigan is the largest city in the state.
