• History: Constructed in 1854, the U.S.S. Constellation is the last sail-only warship built by the U.S. Navy.  The ship was commissioned on July 28, 1855 and Charles H. Bell was its captain. During the Civil War it protected merchant ships and helped to blockade Confederate ports.  From 1859-1861, she played the major roll in disrupting the African slave trade by halting three slave ships and releasing the imprisoned Africans.  The U.S.S. Constellation was officially decommissioned on February 4, 1955. After being decommissioned the Constellation was taken to Constellation Dock in Baltimore, Maryland, where she remains today as a National Historic Landmark.
