History: A wildflower is a flower that grows in the wild and is not intentionally seed or planted. A rich range of wildflowers can be found in the San Francisco Bay Area, unusual for a metropolitan area, but possible due to the city's ready access to rural and wilderness areas and parks. The Great Smoky Mountains also boast a wide variety of spring wildflowers, with more than 1400 species abundant in the area. Perennial woodland wildflowers develop fully in early spring , quickly bloom and produce seed. After this process occurs and the leaves drop, only the underground root and bulbs remain and do so for the rest of the year. This growth strategy is found commonly in forests that allow for high levels of sunlight to reach the plants . Across America, great efforts continue to be made to preserve wildflower population.
