The Lincoln Wheat Cent series ran from 1909 through 1958.  This type of Lincoln Wheat Penny was only minted in 1943.  In 1943 the composition of the Lincoln Wheat Cent was changed to zinc-coated steel to conserve copper for munitions needed in World War II. The 1943 Steel Penny encountered problems ranging from production difficulties to appearance and use in circulation. The following year the War Production Board made copper, taken from discarded shell casings, available to the Mint and the composition was changed to 95% copper & 5% zinc. In 1947 the coin was returned to the original pre-war composition of 95% copper and 5% zinc/tin alloy.   The coin weighs 2.70 grams and is comprised of steel coated with zinc. These wartime Lincoln Wheat Cents have a diameter of 19mm.  This Lincoln Wheat Penny is of great worth and value to the collector who needs to fill a hole in their Lincoln Penny set.  We offer an incredible selection of NGC and PCGS certified Cents!
