The U.S. Mint specially designed this Mount Rushmore 2 Coin Uncirculated Set to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of Mount Rushmore National Park. There is a 1991-P Mount Rushmore Commemorative Uncirculated Silver Dollar as well as a 1991-D Mount Rushmore Commemorative Unicrculated Clad Half Dollar in this 1991 Mount Rushmore Commemorative 2 Coin Uncirculated Set. 

There were 133,139 of the Mount Rushmore Silver Uncirculated Commemorative Dollars minted in 1991 at the Philadelphia (P) mint. Marika Somogyi designed the obverse of this Mount Rushmore Commemorative Dollar which features and image of the Mount Rushmore Memorial wreathed in laurel. The reverse of this Mount Rushmore Commemorative Dollar was designed by Frank Gasparro and features the Heraldic Eagle Crest over a map of the United States. This 1991-P Mount Rushmore Uncirculated Silver Commemorative Dollar is comprised of 90% silver (0.76 troy ounce) and 10% copper with a diameter of 38.10mm and a weight of 26.73 grams.

The 1991-D Mount Rushmore Commemorative Uncirculated Clad Half Dollar is one of 172,754 minted at the Denver (D) Mint. Marcel Jovine designed the obverse of the Mount Rushmore Commemorative Half Dollar which features an image of Mount Rushmore. The reverse of the Mount Rushmore Commemorative Half Dollar was designed by James Ferrell and features an image of the American Buffalo. This 1991-D Mount Rushmore Commemorative Uncirculated Half Dollar is comprised of 92% copper and 8% nickel with a diameter of 30.61mm and a weight of 11.34 grams.

Modern Commemorative Coins

The U.S. Mint did not make commemorative coins from 1955-1981, despite repeated calls from the public to do so. In 1982 the Treasury department finally issued it's first commemorative coin since 1954, a silver half dollar honoring the 250th anniversary of George Washington's birth. In the past, the responsiblity for distributing commemorative coins had been placed in the hands of a commission or private individuals. This time, the responsibility fell to the U.S. Mint, and all profits were distributed to the U.S. Government. With the coming of the 1983 and 1984 Los Nageles Omypics, came the opportunity to place a surcharge on each coin, each to the benefit of an organization that was determined by Congress (in this case, the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee). While this change was widely criticized at the time, it is now the standard and the practice continues with very little controversy.

While modern commemorative coins have not seen much appreciation from the public in general, these coins continue be be incredibly significant in their historical, cultural and sentimental value.
