We are pleased to offer for sale this 1995-S Basketball Atlanta XXVI Olympic Games Centennial Commemorative Uncirculated Clad Half Dollar. This XXVI Olympiad Basketball Commemorative Clad Half Dollar was minted in 1995 and is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. This 1995-S XXVI Olympiad Basketball Clad Uncirculated Half Dollar was struck to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Modern Olympic Games. There were 171,001 of the 1995-S Atlanta Olympic Games Centennial Basketball Uncirculated Commemorative Clad Half Dollar minted at the San Francisco (S) Mint. This Atlanta Basketball Uncirculated Half Dollar is comprised of 92% copper and 8% nickel with a diameter of 30.61 and a weight of 11.34 grams. The obverse of the 1995-S XXVI Olympiad Basketball Commemorative Uncirculated Clad Half Dollar was designed by Clint Hansen and features an image of Basketball players involved in competition. The reverse side of the 1995-S XXVI Olympiad Basketball Commemorative Uncirculated Clad Half Dollar was designed by T. James Ferrell and features the image of a globe and the Atlanta Olympic Games logo. This 1995-S XXVI Olympic Games Basketball Uncirculated Half Dollar is encapsulated and comes in the original U.S. Mint packaging with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA).

Modern Commemorative Coins

The U.S. Mint did not make commemorative coins from 1955-1981, despite repeated calls from the public to do so. In 1982 the Treasury department finally issued it's first commemorative coin since 1954, a silver half dollar honoring the 250th anniversary of George Washington's birth. In the past, the responsiblity for distributing commemorative coins had been placed in the hands of a commission or private individuals. This time, the responsibility fell to the U.S. Mint, and all profits were distributed to the U.S. Government. With the coming of the 1983 and 1984 Los Nageles Omypics, came the opportunity to place a surcharge on each coin, each to the benefit of an organization that was determined by Congress (in this case, the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee). While this change was widely criticized at the time, it is now the standard and the practice continues with very little controversy.

While modern commemorative coins have not seen much appreciation from the public in general, these coins continue be be incredibly significant in their historical, cultural and sentimental value.
