This New Rochelle Anniversary Half Dollar was designed by Gertrude K Lathrop and was struck to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the founding of New Rochelle New York by the French Huguenots in 1688. The obverse of the New Rochelle Commemorative Half Dollar features a calf and a figure of John Pell representing the purchase of the land by the Huguenots. The title to the land specified that a fattened calf be given away every year on June 20th. The reverse of the New Rochelle Silver Commemorative Half Dollar shows the fleur-de-lis (flower of the lily) which was adapted from the seal of the city. There were only 15,266 of thisNew Rochelle Anniversary Silver Half Dollar minted at the Philadelphia Mint in 1938, making it of great worth and value to the commemorative coin collector. The New Rochelle Commemorative Coin is comprised of .900 silver and .100 copper (90% Silver), has a diameter of 30.6mm, and weighs 12.5 grams.
